Farm Fresh donating 5 cents for Reusable Bag usage

Farm Fresh and their 45 stores throughout Hampton Roads and northeastern North Carolina, is receiving a commendation from the Virginia General Assembly for exemplary environmental stewardship because of its reusable shopping bag program.

Daily Press reports that each time a reusable bag is used in a Farm Fresh store instead of paper or plastic, Farm Fresh makes a five-cent donation to the nonprofit environmental organization for its Hampton Roads education, restoration, and advocacy programs. Farm Fresh also gives the customer a nickel discount for each reusable bag utilized.

In the first 12 months of the program, Farm Fresh Supermarkets have sold 81,265 reusable bags, being used 456,743 times in 2008. Which is preventing more than 538,008 plastic grocery bags from making their way into Virginia’s waste stream or as litter in its roads or fields.

First Alternative co-op charges to use plastic grocery bags

As of the Fourth of July, the First Alternative co-op will become the first grocery in Corvallis to charge for plastic and paper grocery bags. Co-op spokeswoman Emily Hagen said Friday that co-op customers support the move. 841 responded to a survey between November and January, about whether to follow the lead of a co-op in Ashland and charge a nickel for each disposable bag as a way of discouraging the use of such bags because of their adverse environmental impact.

724 co-op customers responded, saying yes to the nickel-a-bag charge.

Last year, the co-op tried to get the city to pass an ordinance that would require all outlets to charge for bags, but when the council did not give the OK so co-op members decided to lead by example.

“Once we did the survey and found out there was so much support for it, we decided we’d better do it,” Hagen said.

Roundy’s Expands Reusable Bag Program

Roundy’s Supermarkets, Inc. launched “Doing Our Part” this week. Their reusable bag program at Pick ’n Save, Copps, Rainbow and Metro Market stores throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Customers were to receive a 5-cent credit for each Roundy’s reusable bag brought in during their shopping trip and used to pack their groceries. The program now includes many more reusable bags – baskets, canvas bags, and ones from other suppliers. See the particulars here…
